The two terms chief guest and guest of honour both refer to an important guest at an event, festivity or ceremony. Chief guest refers to the most important guest at a function whereas guest of honour refers to the person in whose honour a festivity or ceremony is held.

Let’s say you organized a surprise party for your teacher on her birthday.You invited your teacher’s favorite teacher for the party as a mean to surprise her.Here your teacher would be the “Guest of honor” and your teacher’s teacher would be the “Chief Guest”

The Guest of Honour is diplomatically invited for a dual motive - (i) to take over as the Chief Guest, in case the Chief Guest does not arrive or (ii) for their social, educationist or in your price range significance retaining his or her affiliation advantages in thoughts or (iii) for the purpose of honoring this man
